about
"All With All" was written and recorded as part of my way of honoring the year anniversary of the death of my wife Anne Garland. The lyrical and melodic format of a traditional folk song freed me to speak fairly plainly, and memories of the rhapsodic style of saxophonist Albert Ayler helped inspire the accompaniment. The song was completed and released on the year anniversary, July 21, 2020, and is dedicated to all who survive and all who die.

lyrics
All With All
Pretty bird won’t you fly
All the way to my love?
Let her know I travel still,
My journey’s long.
Pretty ray of golden sun,
Won’t you show where she’s gone?
Something’s wrong, we were two,
Now I’m one.
Pretty rose, with her hands
She put your roots in the ground.
Her hands aren’t here
But you continue to grow.
Pretty sky, let the bird
And the ray and the rose
Seek and see,
Live and grow under you.
Pretty thought, pretty hope
Have you gone away too?
Pretty dream — wherein time
is all here, all at once,
Nothing lost, no-one gone,
Then is now.
Maybe love is the sky
Where we fly to and fro,
I to her, she to me,
All to all.
Maybe love is the sky
Where we fly to and fro,
I with her, you with us,
All with all.

Composer/singer/multi-instrumentalist David Garland has been steadily shaping songs in new ways since
1980.
"Like many great songwriters before him, Garland pushes the limits of acceptable harmony and dissonance, yet never at the expense of beauty. If it's not possible for popular music to reach the heights of the great classical masters, it seems no one has told David Garland."
